Dentofacial Orthopedics

What Is Dentofacial Orthopedics?

Dr. Alquizar is a specialist in "Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics." In order for a dentist to become a specialist, it requires several additional years of school dedicated to a specific area of dentistry.

There are nine different specialties that The American Dental Association sanctions. Of these nine specialties is Orthodontics and Dentofacial Orthopedics.

Orthodontics focuses on tooth movement, while Dentofacial Orthopedics helps to guide facial development and growth. Orthodontists use certain appliances to guide tooth movement, while the Dentofacial Orthopedic specialist might also utilize headgear or expanders to correct any abnormalities in the facial structure. Orthopedic treatment often involves a two-phase process and typically begins when a patient is around seven or eight years old.

Because Dr. Alquizar is a specialist, he has the knowledge and skill in both areas, and can assist in the process of normalizing the growth of a patient’s bone structure as well as repair any imbalances of a patient’s face and jaw.
