Types of Braces in Miami & Kendall Orthodontics
Metal Braces
Traditional Metal Braces
The type of braces people are most familiar with are the traditional metal braces. They have been around for decades, but today's version of metal braces is completely different. The brackets, bands and archwires are much, much smaller and more comfortable. These braces are made from high-grade stainless steel and patients can choose colorful elastics to customize their smile during treatment.
Gold Braces
These braces function the same way that traditional metal braces do, using brackets, bands and archwires to correct crooked, crowded teeth, but the stainless steel brackets have a gold overlay. The main difference between traditional metal braces and gold braces are the aesthetics, and gold braces are slightly more expensive.
Ceramic Braces
Ceramic braces are used for patients who want a less visible orthodontic option. The brackets are almost invisible, making them a popular option for older teens and adult patients who don't want to look like they are wearing braces. These brackets are slightly larger than metal ones and require diligent oral hygiene to prevent staining. Sometimes an orthodontist will use ceramic braces for the smile zone — the upper front teeth — and traditional metal brackets on the rest of the teeth that aren't visible when smiling.
Invisible (Clear) Orthodontic Appliances
Invisalign®
Invisalign is a series of clear, removable aligners that gradually straighten teeth without brackets or wires. The two biggest benefits of Invisalign are that they are practically invisible and they can be removed for eating, drinking and dental care. The aligners are comfortable because they are custom made and do not have any metal components to irritate the cheeks, lips or tongue. You can read more about Invisalign on our Invisalign page. Lingual Braces
Lingual braces are hidden behind the teeth and are therefore "invisible" when you smile. Lingual braces are 100% customized to match the shape of your teeth and therefore the metal appliances are created uniquely for you. Lingual braces are a very reasonable option for athletes, models, actors/actresses, musicians who play wind instruments, and adult professionals.
